The Newest “London Bridge”
Just in time for the Olympics, there’s a whole new way to see London—and cross the River Thames, while you’re at it. A brand-new cable car system, called the Emirates Air Line after the project’s sponsor, will provide direct access between Greenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks and a link between the O2 arena and the ExCeL Centre, two major venues for the Games.
It will take just five minutes to cross the river, for a fee of £5 for a one-way pass. The cable car system, a low-emission form of transport, is fully accessible to wheelchair users and bicyclists.
The Emirates Air Line isn’t just a fun new way to see the London skyline—it’s part of a major initiative by Transport for London to make sure the city is ready for the Olympic crowds. If you’re headed to London this summer, make sure you check out their interactive map of potential travel hotspots.
