Romantic Paris for a Song
Ah Paris, the world capital of love and romance. Sadly, La Ville-Lumière is not immune to overpriced tourist traps, so we’ve come up with a few ways to celebrate your love (and even pop the question!) for almost free.
Chocolat: It’s been said that chocolate has aphrodisiac properties, so start with a walk of the city’s finest chocolate shops. Design your own chocolaterie tour with this interactive map or use one of these downloadable itineraries.
Vin: It’s just not Paris without it. If you have something to celebrate (and let’s face it, lunch and dinner count), stop by one of the dozens of wine shops that pepper the city. We like Caves Augé (116, Boulevard Hausmann), one of the oldest in Paris, or La Dernière Goutte (6 rue Bourbon le Château). If you decide to take a bottle home with you to remember your tip by, be sure to follow these packing tips.
Fleurs: Paris’ flower-and-bird markets are a colorful, fragrant way to spend a morning. Even if you don’t buy anything, it’s a great place to stroll hand-in-hand and pause to snap some photos. The one on Ile de la Cité is the oldest, dating from 1808, and the largest.
Marchés: Wander through whichever Parisian greenmarket is local to you. Pick up a hunk of cheese (Compte is always a good bet), a crusty baguette, some clementines or tiny strawberries (or other fresh fruit that’s in season) and a slab of foie gras or caviar. We’re going somewhere with this, can you tell?
Parcs: Paris’ outdoor spaces are at once public and private, perfect for a romantic picnic. The base of the Eiffel Tower, the banks of the Seine—where you can wave to passing bateaux mouches—and the Jardin des Tuileries are old favorites. To explore a less-known park, take your picnic to the Promenade Plantée, an elevated park similar to New York’s High Line. It’s the perfect Parisian spot—without treading too heavily on cliché—to propose.
Paris is part of our Milestone Vacations collection as one of four romantic spots to celebrate an engagement. Check out the special offers at Shangri-La Hotel, an elegant hotel with stunning Eiffel Tower views.
