Game of Thrones fans eye Carcassonne for Convention
Winter is coming… to the French walled town of Carcassonne. And by winter, we mean hordes of die-hard Game of Thrones fans who are hoping to hold a convention in a historic setting that reflects that of the blockbuster TV show.
The unofficial event is planned for March 2014, just before the start of the show’s fourth season, and promises “giant role plays across the entire village, medieval banquets and sword-fighting,” according to thelocal.fr. Event organizers need €75,000 to make this happen and are turning to the Game of Thrones fan base to help them out. So far, they have raised 3% of their goal. [Update: They're now at about 10% of their goal, with €7,300 raised.]
Carcassonne is a fantastic, often overlooked destination in France. Nestled in the Pyrenees, the city is encircled by fortifications which date back to Roman times and were painstakingly restored in the 1850s. With moats and drawbridges, a Museum of Torture, and towers and ramparts that overlook lush vineyards, it’s the ideal real-world stand-in for a kingdom of Westeros.
