Dubrovnik: An Adriatic Gem

Dubrovnik: An Adriatic Gem

Where better to honor a lasting love than Dubrovnik, a city whose history holds the secret to perseverance in good times and bad. In this week’s Milestone Vacation feature we travel from a California valley to Mediterranean port cities to raise our glasses to those celebrating with a vow renewal ceremony.

Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, testifies to more than a thousand years of documented history and an astonishing cultural heritage. At Villa Dubrovnik, an ideal retreat where the past intersects with modern luxury, a series of exclusive experiences await.

Coffee in the Capital

Take a morning flight to Zagreb, where you will be met by your guide and driver for a tour of this vibrant city. Walk from Zrinjevac, through the avenues of trees and flowers to the main city square of Ban Jelačić, the heart of the city. Continue the tour to the Upper Town and its medieval twin settlements: secular Gradec and ecclesiastical Kaptol. Discover its cobblestone streets, mediaeval towers, the vivacious green market, old houses and churches with their beautiful multi-colored roofs.

The Trails of Endurance

Embark on a full day exploration of the peninsula of Pelješac, one of the best winegrowing regions in Croatia. The rugged terrain and rocky coastline create a dramatic backdrop to the cultivation of centuries-old vines. In the small villages, enjoy wine tasting at the three most renowned wineries. Quality soil and the Dalmatian sun produce abundant grape bunches, traditionally used to make Croatia’s most renowned wines: “Dingač”, “Postup” and “Plavac.”

After the wine tastings, continue to Ston – a paradise for sea food lovers. Set off on a stroll through the town – famous for its defensive stone walls. As it was an important military fort of the Dubrovnik Republic, Ston was protected with 5 km-long medieval walls, the biggest in Europe. The walls protected the precious salt pans that contributed to Dubrovnik Republic’s wealth. It is the among the oldest working salt mines in the world.
