Becoming Crystallized

Becoming Crystallized

It starts the moment you board the ship. The warmth and friendliness of the crew envelop you and you feel like a guest in someone’s beautiful home. That’s the feeling we had upon boarding the Crystal Serenity in Copenhagen.

It continued when we saw our stateroom and met our butler. The “what can we do for you” attitude is prevalent throughout the ship. On the Lido deck, after asking our names, the staff always greeted us each day and asked if we wanted our iced tea or cappuccino. They remembered and made us feel like we were truly welcome. Is it the pampering, the feeling of welcome, the delicious food, the many dining venues (all complimentary, including Prego and Silk Road), the entertainment, the informative lecturers, the myriad informative classes in the beautiful lab complete with state-of-the art Apple computers? Yes, it’s all of the above and more.

It’s the staff’s ability to anticipate what their guests might need or want to do. It’s the eye-eye contact every employee makes when greeting you with a smile and hello as you walk by.

This itinerary was particularly lovely. I took a USC course in Making Movies with your iPad. I have to say it was the most fun and enjoyable way to create a lasting memory of our vacation. I created a Trailer and original 4-minute movie celebrating our special anniversary using my photos, the videos I took with my iPhone and iPad and the music I had in iTunes.

There are a lot of “luxury” cruise lines and each has its own following. From its inception, Crystal has gone out of its way to ensure their guests have positive lasting memories and positive experiences. The fact that so many book on board and that Crystal has been voted the Top Large Cruise Line for over 19 years in a row is proof they’re doing a lot of the right things!

Crystal Cruises has teamed up with University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts to present a course on digital filmmaking on the iPad. The five-hour course teaches filmmaking tools and techniques to Crystal guests wishing to create their own movies using iPads and a $4.99 app, iMovie.
Using their own iPads, guests are taught to create movies in a documentary style, including the components of filmmaking theory, how to edit footage and add graphics, voiceover, and special effects from the pros. The takeaway?  A host of new skills and a fantastic way to share vacation memories with family and friends.
